HOPKINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A head-on collision claims two lives Sunday night. The crash took place on Highway 11 East between Pickton and Winnsboro at about 6pm.
Juana Layva, 32, of Scroggins was pronounced dead at the scene by Hopkins County Justice of the Peace Yvonne King. Aubrey Mullinex, 10, of Winnsboro was air-lifted to Children's Medical Center in Dallas and later died.
Winnsboro Superintendent Dr. Mark Bosold says Aubrey was a fifth grader at Winnsboro Middle School. He added that Aubrey's parents are both special education teachers at the school, and have worked there three or four years. According to Bosold, a sibling survives Aubrey.
Grief counselors have been brought in from the district and surrounding community churches for students who wish to speak with them. Substitutes are teaching Aubrey's parent's classes so the couple can have as much time as needed to grieve.
The wreck is being investigated by Highway Patrol Corporal Cary Barnett.
