TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A Wood County constable is in a Tyler hospital Wednesday, after being attacked by a mentally ill patient.

It happened Wednesday afternoon at the patient's home outside of Mineola. ETMC was at the home, and called for assistance from the sheriff's office when the patient became combative.

Constable Ed Shadbolt responded to the call, and was involved in some sort of altercation with the patient.

"When you're inside of a residence, most anything can occur," said Constable Steve Bowser, with the Wood County Sheriff's Department. "There are a lot of objects around, you can fall against something, you can hit something, and sustain injury that way."

Constable Shadbolt was able to drive back to his office, but was then transported by ambulance to Tyler. Wood County authorities plan to interview him before pressing any charges against the patient, who's name has not been released.
