UTHSC hosts Better Breathing Conference

TYLER, TX - Not many people are aware that lung disease is the number three killer in the United States, responsible for one in six deaths, according to the American Lung Association.

In addition, more than 35 million Americans live with lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.

If you have one of these illnesses, or you want to learn how to protect your lungs and prevent disease, the 2009 Better Breathing Conference is for you.

The conference will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Biomedical Research Center Auditorium on the campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, at the intersection of Texas 155 and U.S. 271 in Tyler.

Three experienced physicians will offer information about how you can breathe better and keep your lungs healthy. The topics and their presenters are:

• "H1N1 & the Flu: Protect Yourself & Your Family," Jeffrey Levin, MD, who is board certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine;
• "COPD: Breathing Easier - From Distress to Hope," Eli Azzi, MD, who is board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and pulmonary disease; and
• "Eyes Wide Open: The Truth about Sleep & Your Health," James Stocks, MD, who is board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep disorders.

In addition, there will be exhibits, screenings, and educational presentations. The conference is free, but space is limited and reservations are required. A complimentary lunch and valet parking will be provided.
