Former East Texas mayor calling for current mayor's resignation

WELLS, TX (KLTV) - A former East Texas mayor is calling out his successor, saying the current mayor needs to resign. It's happening in the community of Wells, north of Lufkin. According to the McClennan County Jail, the current mayor of Wells, Corbitt Doss was convicted of his third DWI in 1997, which is a felony. He completed his 10 years of probation in 2007. And, according to the State Attorney General's Office, a felon may run after they have been "released from the resulting disabilities" of the conviction. But, former wells mayor Jim Maddux, who was voted out of office when doss was elected, says doss needs to resign.

"I feel that the position of mayor is an honorable position and I believe it must have integrity and I think it just degrades that," said Jim Maddux, a former Wells mayor. "It degrades the integrity and honor of that office."

"Voters registration had said that I could run for office because I was not, you know, I had done my probation and so I was, basically it was over with and it wouldn't be held against me unless I got another DWI," explained Corbitt Doss, the current Wells mayor. "If I got another DWI I was going to have to go to prison. And, I mean, that was in the past, 11 years ago. Since then, I haven't had a drink."

Maddux says he's seeking help from the Wells city attorney on this matter. Calls to the city attorney's office we're not immediately returned. We'll keep you updated on this story.
