Longview Citizens Honor Marine

The community of Longview lined the cities' northern streets this afternoon to say thank you to one of their own for making the ultimate sacrifice.   It was only 30 seconds out of their lives,  but for the people in Longview it was their way of honoring their fallen hero, Staff Sergeant John Stock, 26, killed last week in Iraq.

"I think it's important for everybody that can to be out here today to honor the memory of this fine young man who gave everything he had and everything he ever is going to have," said Longview resident Marshall Mitchell.

"It's a small way, but at least it's a fit way that we can show them that we support them," said Longview resident Ann Harris.  Stock was killed along with three other marines by a suicide car bomber in Iraq September 6th.   As his funeral procession passed by Longview High School, it was clear that his sacrifice will not be forgotten.

"I thought of a bible verse where it says 'greater love hath no man than you lay down your life for another', and that what he's done," said onlooker Marilyn Manning.  With the Patriot Guard Riders leading the way, Stock was taken to his final resting place.  Many who lined the procession route never knew the marine, but felt a deep sense of gratitude to him.

"When we lose one of our brothers in situations like this, it's hard to express," said army veteran Brian Eaton.

"I'll remember this day as long as my heart beats," said Mitchell.  Staff sergeant Stock was laid to rest at Rosewood Cemetery.  An estimated 2,000 people lined the roadway this afternoon along his procession route.
