Longview Native Releases Movie

An East Texas man is making a name for himself in Hollywood. Steve Mccurdy, a 1968 graduate of Longview High School, is banking on his independent film being a hit, a film he shot in just 28 days.

"Actually the ducks were not in a row but we said this is all the time we've got get in line we're shooting" says Mccurdy.

Mccurdy's film, "I Flunked Sunday School", is a comedy about a character named "Lloyd Boyd", a man who feels he's been charged by God to be a personal preacher.

"'I Flunked Sunday School' is the story of a young man who always tries to do the right thing and always gets in trouble for it, a lot of people say it's like the Charlie Brown character" says Mccurdy.

But when it came time to rase money for the movie, the former KLTV production assistant gave a unique pitch to investors.

"You'll probably never see this money again which was a real strange sales technique on our part" he says.

The film chronicles Boyd's experiences, and something we all can relate to, his mistakes.

"If you've tried and failed, you can identify with Lloyd" says the films lead actor Kevin Dean.

It's not a commentary on religion, rather the normal struggles we all face.

"If one person or 2 people or a handful of people are just touched , encouraged by this, that would be worth it" Dean says.

Mccurdy hopes the film is a pleasant surprise to movie goers, leading to more success.

"I think we all do the best we can, and yet we fail sometimes, and if it's good people will say make another one of those" says Mccurdy.

"I Flunked Sunday School" is playing all weekend at Tyler's Carmike 14 Theater and the Carmike 10 in Longview.
