Dog attacks. more than a half- dozen happen every month, according to the Smith County Constables. Over the weekend, a Smith County woman was attacked by a pit bull.
Bruises, scratches and a broken leg are reminders of the awful attack. Saturday evening, Wendy Cooper was jogging when she heard something behind her.
"It was like a lion, going to attack a deer, that's what I heard and my instincts told me I'm either going to live or I'm going to die. He just hit me and broke my ankle instantly and I heard the bone snap. It happened really quick, he was in my face. I had my hands around his throat and around his neck and all my instincts were telling me was don't let his teeth get on you," says Wendy.
While screaming for help Wendy held the pit bull off. "The kids from across the street came and tried to help but they couldn't," says Wendy.
That's when the owner of the pit bull came to her rescue. Wendy says those 3 to 4 minutes seemed like an eternity.
Today, the Smith County constables interviewed Wendy about the incident. After filing a report, they went to see the dog's owners. The dog will now be quarantined at a vet's office for 10 days.
"At the end of 10 days, the dog will have to be put in a pen with concrete top, bottom, a lock and a gate. The owners will have to get a $100,000 liability because it has been declared a dangerous dog or it will have to be put down. There is no other option it's state law," say Constable Frank Creath.
As for Wendy, she gives Karate and Tai-bo classes the credit for her quick instincts.
"That will to live and I think it was the will of my kids and I fought him, I just held him off of me," says Wendy.
Wendy is recovering from surgery. Doctors say she is expected to make a full recovery.
Constable Creath says the pit bull's owners have taken it to a veterinary clinic. He say no criminal charges will be filed because they are cooperating.
