Hurricane Rita Traffic Briefing

Traffic on Interstates 10 and 45, and U.S. 59 to the Houston-Galveston area is flowing.

I-10 east of Houston is open.  Exits into Beaumont and portions of southeast Texas are still closed. Travel is still restricted on area roadways south of U.S. 190 and east of State Highway 146.

Today is Day 2 of the staggered 3-day return home plan for the Houston-Galveston area.  Residents, according to where they live, are asked to adhere to the following schedule for return trips to the area:

·        Day 2 (Sept. 26) — Residents living south of I-10, including Harris and Galveston counties. This includes residents of Pasadena, Baytown, League City, Texas City, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. Residents in Richmond, Stafford, Rosenberg, Sugarland, Pearland and surrounding communities, including all Houston residents living inside of I-610.

·        Day 3 (Sept. 27) — Residents living in all remaining areas east of I-45 and north of I-10 extending to Liberty and Chambers counties.

Supplies are being replenished and fuel availability is increasing in the area.

TxDOT bridge inspectors have completed assessments in the storm-impacted areas and there appear to be no problems with any of the spans.

TxDOT crews are still working to remove millions of cubic yards of debris from area roadways.

The Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry is operating, though open only to residents and clean-up workers.

For more information, call the TxDOT Public Information Office, (512) 463-8588.
