Magazine Reports Details Of A Guantanamo Interrogation

Time magazine is reporting on an 84-page document detailing the Guantanamo interrogation of one detainee, Mohamed al-Qahtani. Time says he's suspected of being the twentieth 9/11 hijacker. He was captured during the war in Afghanistan.

According to the logbook, which covers al-Qahtani's interrogations from November 2002 to January 2003, the Time article reports that daily interviews began at 4 a.m. and sometimes continued until midnight.

Time says interrogators at Guantanamo used such techniques as dripping water on al-Qahtani's head, strip-searching him, and depriving him of sleep. The account also says that after receiving fluid intravenously because he was dehydrated, al-Qahtani was told to urinate in his pants by interrogators who refused his request to use the bathroom.

During the period covered by the logbook, Time reported, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld approved 16 additional interrogation techniques for use on certain detainees.

The Defense Department says in response that the interrogation "was guided by a very detailed plan and conducted by trained professionals motivated by a desire to gain actionable intelligence." The Pentagon says al-Qahtani provided valuable information on the logistics of the September eleventh attacks.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is also planning hearings later this month.
