Football Coach Investigated For Alleged Misconduct

Quitman Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Rick Porter was placed on administrative leave Friday, just hours before his team was set to take the field in a playoff game.

Quitman is in Wood County, about 35 miles North of Tyler.

The Quitman Bulldogs pulled off a bi-district playoff victory against Hughes Springs Friday night. Nearly everyone that lives in Quitman was there, except Head Coach Rick Porter.

"We're still investigating, we're still investigating the allegations that have been made," said Superintendent Bill Travis.

Porter was notified of the allegations Thursday. He was told at that time he was restricted to the field house. He was formally suspended just after noon Friday, and told he was under investigation for alleged misconduct.

"I know there is a lot of gossip out there but we're trying to ensure the dignity of everybody involved... that's my concern," said Travis.

Travis will not comment on details of those allegations, however sources close to the school say they involve inappropriate language directed toward at least one female student.

The superintendent said the district is taking those accusations seriously.

"He's involved in that, I understand that, but by the same token, I want to make sure we've done our homework that we have thoroughly investigated all the allegations," he said.

Travis said no time frame has been set for when that investigation should be completed. He said for now the team is preparing for its second-round playoff game, with or without Coach Porter.

Coach Porter has been the Athletic Director and Head Coach in Quitman since 2000. He was previously coach at Marlin High School and in Eustace.

Porter made a comment to KLTV Sunday. He said he welcomes an investigation and doesn't want this to distract from his team's preparation. Porter will remain suspended and won't be allowed to attend any games until the end of the investigation.

Quitman is set to play in its second-round playoff match-up Saturday in Gladewater.
