SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Kim Cargill, the Smith County woman who has been convicted of killing her mentally-challenged babysitter Cherry Walker, begins her trip to death row today.

According to Jason Clark, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Cargill arrived in Gatesville, Texas, today. She is at the Woodman State Jail there for intake processing.

Once she is processed, she will be taken to the Mountain View Unit to begin her time on female death row.

Wednesday morning, Kimberly Cargill was appointed a new attorney to represent her in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. She has an automatic appeal filed on her behalf.

She'll be the tenth woman currently on death row in Texas. Some of those are Suzanne Basso, convicted of leading a group, encouraging five others to kidnap, torture and eventually murder a mentally challenged 59-year-old man she had promised to marry, along with eight others.

Women on death row spend their days awaiting their punishment in Central Texas along with dozens of other prisoners.

The average time for any death row offender to die by lethal injection is just over 10-and-a-half-years.
