WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he still intends to act on his own to change immigration policies but stopped short of reiterating his past vows to act by end of summer. Obama also said today at a White House press conference that the flow of unaccompanied minors attempting to cross the border has fallen, with the number of apprehensions in August dropping below July levels.
TEMPLE, Texas (AP) - A 57-year-old man who formerly worked in law enforcement has been indicted in the fatal shooting of a police chief in the small Central Texas town of Little River-Academy. The Temple Daily Telegram reports a Bell County grand jury indicted David Risner yesterday on one count of capital murder of a peace officer in the June 19th death of Chief Lee Dixon. Risner is jailed without bond.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The director of the Texas Film Commission says incentives used to reimburse production companies are helping lure them to the Lone Star State. Director Heather Page told a House panel yesterday that legislation last year allowed the commission to raise its refund rate for production costs by 5 percent.
LAREDO, Texas (AP) - Authorities say the body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned while swimming in a Laredo lake has been found. The Laredo Morning Times reports that the boy's body was found floating in Lake Casa Blanca early Wednesday. The boy went under water and did not resurface Tuesday evening.
