LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

(KTRE) – Corporal punishment is still a punishment option in Lufkin public schools and it is not setting well with one parent.

"I don't need nobody doing what I can do myself," said Valerie Lockhart.

Valerie Lockhart said her fifth grade son was paddled twice over a quiz on a forgotten book.  She is hopping mad because she signed a corporal punishment form that said she did not want her child spanked.

She even added a handwritten note to the form that stated, "No one, and I mean no one is to paddle my son!!"

Despite the note, her wishes were ignored and her fifth grader was paddled.  She said she only found out after the second paddling when her son called her in tears.  Lockhart said she met with Assistant Superintendent Johnny Giles who found a copy of the form.

"He looks me straight in the face, Miss Lockhart, it never should have happened.  It won't happen again."

Lockhart said she isn't against the policy at LISD, but she wants school administrators to abide by parents' wishes on the form before paddling students.

LISD sends the corporal punishment forms to parents at the beginning of each school year.  Assistant Superintendent Giles referred all comments to the Superintendent.  Superintendent Roy Knight has been at a conference this week and has not answered KTRE's inquiries.

The Lufkin ISD Student Handbook addresses corporal punishment in two sections, the Student Code of Conduct and Lufkin High School Eight Step Discipline Plan.  More.
