Super memories

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -   In 1977 Longview native Jeb Blount got a surprise phone call on N.F.L. draft day.

"Back then it was so different," said Blount.  "No ESPN, no real coverage. I'm out walking my dog Ottis."

The Oakland Raiders called to say Al Davis had drafted Blount in the 2nd round.  Blount would only spend one season with the Raiders. It happened to be a Super Bowl year.

"That was at the Rose Bowl," Blount said.  "The largest crowd I've ever seen."

It was a lot to handle, even for a future Hall of Famer like Gene Upshaw.

"Upshaw was so nervous," said Blount.  "I walked up to him and said 'Uppy we will bring the world championship of professional football.' He said 'Jeb that's easy for you to say because you're not starting.'"

It was tough for Blount to sit on the biggest stage.

"Anytime I'm near the field I want to be apart of the action, so that was frustrating,"said Blount.  "I just did my best to encourage and it's business football."

The Raiders went on to beat the Vikings.  Blount never saw the field, but he did take home a rare piece of jewelry.   A Super Bowl ring is something every pro football player dreams of.

"To believe that someone from East Texas would have the opportunity," said Blount.  "The longer I live the more fortunate I feel to have that experience."

Blount was sent to the Tampa Buccaneers the next season.  He started four games in his final N.F.L. season.
