KILGORE, TX (KLTV) – The Kilgore City Council is meeting Tuesday night and could vote to ban texting-while-driving inside the city limits.

Under the ordinance, dialing and talking while driving would still be okay. But using a cell phone, laptop, or PDA to send a text, could cost you up to $200, if you're caught.

Some drivers are all for it.

"…irritates me. Because I don't think anyone's safe when other people aren't paying attention," said one driver.

Another driver complained of distracted drivers running stop signs, red lights and crossing lanes into on-coming traffic.

Kilgore City Manager Jeff Powell says the city looked at similar "texting-while-driving" bans adopted in other cities before drafting its own.

"I think people do realize that this is a significant safety issue and those that are not out texting, need to be protected," says Powell. "We want to take some proactive action before something bad happens."

Interim Police Chief Roman Roberson says there haven't been any spikes in texting-related accidents, but, driving distracted is still a dangerous proposition.

Roberson admits that enforcement won't be easy. Officers, he says, will have to use their own judgement.

The city says don't expect to see any signs of warning near city limit signs/

By law, the public will have to be notified within ten days if it passes.

The acting Police Chief says the department plans to take 990 days to educate the public about the law, should it go into effect.
