208 Mile trek for Breast Cancer

By Sara Story - bio | email

MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - It's the trek of a lifetime for one East Texas man as he makes his way from Fort Worth to Longview on foot. Oleus Lilly is running to raise money for cancer awareness, and Monday, he made it to Mineola.  The 31-year-old is fueled by the memory of a family member.

"My grandmother," Lilly said. "She was the rock of my life. She passed away with complications due to Breast Cancer three or four years ago. She always joked that I'd run across Texas because I'm always running."

Lilly decided to make the trek and run from Ft. Worth to Longview over the course of 27 days. Lilly will give all of the money he raises to The American Cancer Society.

"One day, I was like, 'I'm not doing anything. I'm not fulfilled at work. I want to make a difference. Why not now?"

It is the second week of Lilly's journey, and he may look like a seasoned runner. However, Lilly has never run a marathon or even a 5K.

"I am alone. I do have a backpack that is 20 pounds. As far as sleeping, I'm sleeping outside. I've had one hotel donated, so I've had one shower," Lilly said.

Lilly said the conditions are the least of his worries. His concern is reaching his goal of raising $100,000.

"I checked the donation chart, and it was at $88," said Lilly. "If we all donate a dollar ... Tyler, Longview, Henderson, Kilgore ... If we all donate a dollar, we can make that."
