TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Often recruited and rarely seen until 2008, the youth vote could once again play a pivotal role in mid term elections. But some say the excitement of change has faded over the last two years.
"I'm real excited to be here rain, sleet, or snow," said college freshman Reed Hale, who refused to miss his chance to vote. "A lot of people would think that a mid term is not as important but I think it's almost more important."
Politicians are hoping the other nearly 44 million voters, ages 18-29 feel the same way after a strong presence in 2008. National estimates have fewer votes returning from the college age crowd, but that wasn't the case in Tyler today.
"I'd of called in sick to work today to come vote," said college senior James Crow.
Students took their places at the polls, some for the very first time. "Since I was like 17 I've wanted to vote," said high school senior Chris Shannon.
Young voter's impact remains to be seen in the mid terms, yet after nearly doubling their turnout in '08, voters say the motivation remains. "People who want to discuss politics and they want to have a side but they don't go vote," said Crow. "If you don't vote you don't have an argument."
Rock The Vote, the national campaign dedicated to recruiting young voters polled those who voted in the 2008 presidential election. When asked about their mid-term election plans, 77% said they plan to vote.
