TYLER, TX (KLTV) - East Texas highschoolers were reminded about the importance of seat belts Tuesday. The Tyler Police Department set up a simulator at Robert E. Lee High School and showed students what happens when a vehicle rolls over.
Law enforcement says they are targeting new drivers before they get out for summer vacation. Every year, they say there are more wrecks between the months of May and July than any other month.
They set up a simulator to show what will happen in a roll-over accident when people are not wearing seatbelts.
The awareness event comes just in time to remind people of all ages about the new state seatbelt laws. Children under 8 years of age must be in a child safety seat unless they have reached 4' 9". Authorities say the law will start being enforced on June 1st.
Another state law currently being enforced is all people riding in a car, regardless of age, must wear a seatbelt. Highschoolers watching the simulator saw first hand the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.
"I just want to wear my seatbelt all the time - no matter if I am in the back seat or the front seat," said Jarrod Col, 16.
"[There was] a lot of shock and surprise on some faces so what we are hoping to do is really emphasize the point that even in a low speed rollover collision you can be ejected from a vehicle and get crushed by that vehicle," explained Brian Tomlin, with the Tyler Police Department.
The Tyler Police Department starts their "Click it or Ticket" campaign next week. It will run until June 5th. Officers will be looking for anyone not wearing a seatbelt.
Authorities say the fine for not wearing a seat belt ranges from $25-$250, plus court fees.
