Community Fest urges East Texans to keep giving

By Sara Story - bio | email

MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - The excitement of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition hasn't disappeared yet, but the Carr family says they have one more wish. Their dream is that the community won't stop giving to those in need. So friends of the Carr family organized Community Fest, and the Carr family's story is inspiring east Texas to serve others.

They're holding back their yawns.  "I'm absolutely exhausted," said Karen Stevenson, a Community Fest organizer and Extreme Makeover volunteer. She, along with other East Texans have come together one more time to wrap up the week of Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

Community Fest was organized to encourage people to keep on giving. "We are going to talk about the concept of "ing". What are you doing? We should be serving, we should be giving, we should be building, we should be feeding, we should be teaching," said Chris Witt, a Community Fest organizer.  Twenty six nonprofit and volunteer organizations showed up to tell community members how they can pitch in. "There are organizations set up that need your help. They are set up and know the families in the communities just like the Carrs," said Witt.

Inspired by the Carr family's story, Witt said, "They reached out to a group of kids that were hopeless. They had no chance whatsoever." Thousands showed up to help build them a new home. It's this enthusiasm Community Fest organizers hoped to capture. Traci Sawyer said, "We need all of those volunteers for these organizations in this room. They need volunteers" Karen Stevenson added, "I'm just hoping that we see the seeds from this. I felt like it was like we were planting a mustard seed and it is just going to grow from here."

Whether it's time, money, or prayers, Traci Sawyer says there's always tomorrow to sleep. "Tomorrow feels like sleeping day," she said.
