The Mike Huckabee Express rolls into East Texas

By Layron Livingston - bio | email

TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - The line snaked pass potted plants and young trees, through the garden center, and into the parking lot.

Droves of East Texans lined up outside Wal-Mart on Troup Hwy with their unsigned copies of A Simple Christmas, Huckabee's new book.

Carole Bolen stood in line for nearly three hours. "I don't do this for too many people," she said.  She was the first to shake hands with the man of the hour.

"To be a conservative and to be a republican don't necessarily go hand in hand," she said. "Huckabee just represents everything that I believe in."

Huckabee said many Americans are simply unhappy with the policies they see.

"The government is trying to shove the health care proposals down our throats that we don't want, they're spending money that we can't possibly afford, and I wish Washington would get the message and change some of their ways," he said.

Huckabee was all smiles, signing books and taking pictures with East Texans. But he frowned at some overly critical comments toward President Obama.

When the president visited Dover Air Force Base to pay his respects to fallen servicemen, some called it a photo-op. Others criticized the White House for hosting trick-or-treaters on Halloween.  Huckabee called it deplorable and wrong.

"Frankly, I think we ought to be criticizing his policies, but we don't have to make them personal," he said. "I'll continue to disagree with his policies, but I'm going to respect him as the president."

As for a future presidential run, Huckabee said, it's too early to tell.

"I'm loving what I'm doing right now," he said.

Huckabee said his decision will depend on what happens during the next midterm election cycle. Today's stop was part of a 64 city, 22 state tour.
