TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8 can be found on bumper stickers and t-shirts. But does the slogan suggest another meaning? The New International Version of Psalm 109:8 reads, "May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership."
Ashton Oravetz, chair of the Smith County Republican Party said the message is clear. "Let him be a one term president, that's what I'm working for," he said.
Oravetz said the message is right--pun intended--but after reading the rest of the Psalm, he said it may not have been the best choice.
Verse 9 of the passage goes on to read, "May his children be fatherless and his wife, a widow."
"It may just be another form of bumper sticker for some people, but I'm not so sure the FBI or the Secret Service will view it that way," said Joanna Reagan, president elect of Texas Democratic Women.
Reagan said there is always a place for freedom of speech and expression, but she calls this hate.
"Someone who is so angry, or so fearful might take it in a completely different way," she said.
Nearly 80 percent of responders disapproved in an online poll conducted by the website, CafePress. The website released a statement, declaring, "some designs, or phrases can assume new meanings, often as a result of public discourse." CafePress said after weighing many factors, the content was removed.
"David wrote that talking about his enemies," said Brian Brandt, pastor of Grace Community Church in Tyler. Brandt said the totality of scripture teaches people to support and pray for those in authority.
Brandt said the Bible will always be taken out of context.
"I don't know the heart of the people who are putting it on their cars, but I doubt it's a very positive thing," he said.
We also searched another site, www.zazzle.com, and found it had removed Psalm 109 merchandise. Zazzle.com said it will be on look out for similar products in the future.
