ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - A 6-year-old child has died after being struck by a falling tree in Athens, according to the Athens Police Department.

At 1:28 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 400 block of West Tyler Street. When they arrived, they learned that a tree had fallen on the child. The child was transported to the hospital by private vehicle, Assistant Chief Rodney Williams said.

The child was later CareFlighted to a hospital in Dallas where they were later pronounced dead.

No identities have been released at this time.

The child was a kindergartner at Athens ISD’s Bel Air Elementary campus.

“With great sadness, I must share that one of our sweet kindergarten babies passed away yesterday in a tragic accident,” Principal Lisa Howell wrote in a post on the Bel Air Elementary Facebook page. “Our teachers talked to their students this morning and gave them time to share their feelings, stories, and concerns.”

Howell said Athens ISD counselors were on hand at the campus throughout the day and will be available throughout the week as needed.

“Please give your kids extra hugs tonight and know they are blessings to all of us at Bel Air,” Howell wrote in the post. “We appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time on behalf of this dear family and those impacted by such a tragic loss.”
