Victim brutally attacked in Tyler park speaks out to empower women

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A Tyler woman who says she was assaulted in a brutal attack at a Tyler park last week says she wants to empower all women to fight back.

“He grabbed me from behind, and he just kept saying he had a knife and I screamed as loud as I could. He put his hands over my mouth and that’s when he took me into the woods,” Arielle Lynd says.

Lynd is, without a doubt, a survivor.

“I don’t want to sit and wallow in this because I will drag myself to hell about it,” Lynd says.

And with what Lynd went through, that seems like it would be easy to do.

“I’m not naïve, I know this is a scary, dangerous world, but I should not be afraid to run in the park in the middle of the day by myself, no one should,” Lynd says.

Lynd went for a run last Thursday evening like she does every day; but this time it was different. She noticed a hooded man was watching her.

“I turned my music down a little bit, and I could hear him running behind me,” Lynd says.

In seconds, he dragged her into the woods. Lynd says she had a knife to her throat and a stranger’s hand on her mouth.

“Something ignited in me when he took me to the ground. I just started moving and kicking and hitting him as hard as I could,” Lynd says.

There is a lesson Lynd says she wants all women to take away from her attack.

“I feel like since we were kids, we were told to just go along with it, and you’ll keep your life. And there was a moment where I really truly thought I was going to die, and like I said, something ignited and I said ‘if you’re going to kill me, I will put up a fight,’” Lynd says.

Lynd eventually wore her attacker down, wrenching the knife away from him and flinging it into the woods. He took off.

Now Tyler police have a suspect in custody; 32-year-old James Earl Roberts Jr., who is now charged with aggravated kidnapping.

“I just want him to know that he’s a coward and I won. I won.” Lynd says.

Despite being held at knife point, Lynd escaped with only minor injuries.
