TVCC men, TJC women picks up wins on Day 1 of NJCAA National tournaments

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The 2019 NJCAA National Tournaments for the men and women started on Monday and two East Texas colleges were victorious.

In Kansas, No.15 Trinity Valley beat No. 18 Shelton State 82-70 toadvance to round 2 where they will play No.2 South Plains on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm.

Tyson jolly led the way for the Cardinals with 23 points and 13 rebounds. The difference in the game was the Cardinals taking a 43-29 advantage. in the second half, Shelton State outscored TVCC by 2 but it was not enough to catch up.

It was not looking good early for TJC as the Lady Apaches were down by 12 with 9 minutes left in the first half. It is not sure what was said in a timeout, but Lady Apache head coach Trina Hoard got the attention of the girls as the Lady Apaches went on to score 31 points in the second quarter and took a 39-31 lead into the half. Salt Lake only managed to put up 20 points in the final 20 minutes and TJC would go on to win 66-51. The Lady Apaches will now play Odessa College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in round 2 of the tournament.
