‘No pain... I just passed out’: Longview coach revived by coworkers talks about collapse

WEBXTRA: Cross-country coach revived by Longview ISD coworkers talks about sudden collapse

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A Longview ISD cross-country coach has two of his fellow coworkers to thank for reviving him after a sudden collapse during track practice.

“There was no pain, no nothing, I just passed out," said coach Ken Jernigan.

Jernigan said he later learned his track students ran into the Lobo Den and alerted two licensed athletic trainers, Deirdre Kay Scotter and Kristin N. Bell. The two women used an AED and CPR to resuscitate him and continued with CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived.

“They went into reaction mode; they started putting all the training they had accumulated into practice, into reality and everything," Jernigan said.

The Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers will meet in Austin on Monday, Jan. 14 to recognize Scotter and Bell for their quick reactions. You can watch the meeting live on YouTube at 9 a.m.
