TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Matthew Ray plays guitar at the Freedom Fellowship Church in Palestine.
That church was broken into two weeks ago and Ray’s guitar, was stolen.
“It was a red Gibson Les Paul electric guitar that we bought from Brendan Gilman from the local band called Backseat Molly,” said Ray.
For Ray, playing guitar was more than just a pastime.
“Playing guitar for me, that’s my escape from everything that I’m going through,” said Ray. “Whatever it may be, when I’m down, depressed, sad, playing guitar brings me happiness.”
Ray said he would probably never play again. That is, until Wednesday night.
“This guy comes into church with a case and my first thought was ‘they already replaced me?’ said Ray. “But then he came up to me and asked if I was Matthew Ray and told me he had something he wanted to give me.”
The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said God told him he needed to give Ray this guitar.
“He said God told me to come tonight and give you something… he opens the case with a gold top, fairly brand new, Epiphone Les Paul.”
Ray said the man wanted nothing in return.
“My initial reaction was… I was in tears. I didn’t know what to say. I was just shocked,” said Ray. “To me, that’s like God’s watching out for me in a way – by sending this guy, bringing me this guitar to the church.”
