Artists invited to submit proposals to be featured on Tyler park’s art wall

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The City of Tyler’s Keep Tyler Beautiful Board is giving artists an opportunity to feature some of their artwork on an art wall which will be installed as part of new renovations at Hillside Park.

Work began in October on new features to the park, the first of a multi-phase project expected to revamp an area that’s been given little attention in recent years. Among the additions is a 200 ft. art wall made up of 20 concrete slates. The city has invited local artists to submit drafts of what they would paint on one of the panels.

“Our vision is to have it complete filled,” said Angela Bennis, community coordinator with Keep Tyler Beautiful. “Twenty pieces of beautiful artwork on the wall. We’ve already got a couple of pieces in.”

Artists of all ages and experience have until January 31 to submit a draft and the first round of artists will be chosen during a February board meeting. Artists will be given the month of March to complete their artwork. However, city officials plan to choose different pieces of art to feature throughout the year, meaning artists who are not chosen during the first round of selections will be encouraged to continue applying.

“It’s just so everyone can get involved,” Bennis added. “We just want it to be a revolving art wall so that it always represents the community and what’s going on in Tyler.”

A legal graffiti wall, innovative play structures, food trucks, and an upgraded soccer complex are among the features as part of the master plan for Hillside Park.

Hillside Park is located on Erwin Street, east of the downtown area. The renovations were approved by the city council back in July, and will be funded primarily through the half-cent sales tax project.
