GILMER, TX (KLTV) - The 81st annual East Texas Yamboree is happening this weekend in Gilmer.
The popular festival started back in the 1930′s when the sweet potato was a major cash crop for Upshur County, but a bug infestation led to a quarantine. Once the quarantine was lifted, the Yamboree Festival was born.
According to event officials, the East Texas Yamboree is the second longest running festival in the state of Texas. Attractions include a carnival and also plenty of food vendors. On Saturday morning, you’ll find royalty in the annual Queen’s Parade on the downtown square. at 11 a.m.
Other events include the annual street dance and barn dance featuring country singer Wade Bowen on Saturday night.
